New Delhi (29.10.2021): RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das may stay in his post till 2024 following the government extending his original tenure by three years.
He is the 25th Governor, appointed on December 12, 2018, after the sudden resignation of then-Governor Urjit Patel.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Shri Shaktikanta Das, lAS Retd. (TN:80) as Governor, Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years beyond 10.12.2021 or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said.
Being part of the government ecosystem as an IAS officer who held several key positions in central and state governments, Das has apparently succeeded where trained and traditional economists like Urjit Patel and Raghuram Rajan couldn't. His success probably lies in the flexibility that an IAS officer most of the time develops by the compulsion of the nature of his/her job to stay in tune with government's policies, even if sometimes they seem to border on whims and fancies.
Having migrated to the RBI from the Finance Ministry where he was directly associated with the preparation of eight Union Budgets, he must have developed the unique ability to be seen as a reliable officer. And that ability has probably paid off in the extension of his RBI tenure like getting various aspirational postings in the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Development Bank (NDB), and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). He has also represented India in international fora like the IMF, G20, BRICS, SAARC, etc.
Thus, his career graph can't but be described as exceptionally impressive.
