With Congress and opposition members playing their usual games, RBI Governor Urjit Patel informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance on Wednesday that the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, deposited in banks after November 8, are still being counted. Therefore, the RBI could not provide the "exact amount" of the scrapped notes received.
Patel also informed the Committee that it had issued tenders for fresh Currency Verification Processing System (CVPS) machines to speed up the counting.
Congress member Digvijaya Singh, always looking for an opportunity to have a go at the NDA government, immediately jumped to ask whether the RBI would be able to complete the counting by May 2019, when the government tenure ends.
Another Opposition member, Naresh Agarwal of the Samajwadi Party, walked out of the meeting to express his dissatisfaction with the proceedings.
