In the first-ever interview immediately after the Uttarakhand High Court quashed President's rule in the state, former state chief Harish Rawat told Head ETV News Network Jagdeesh Chandra that he was willing to open a new chapter in the relationship with the centre if the latter was willing to respect the principles of cooperative federalism.
Rawat said the Centre should know that he has got the mandate and,so, it was obligatory for it to support him in developing the state. " I tried to develop the state, but they tried to dislodge me," he added.
He commended the High Court judgment, saying that the court has once again proved that it's the custodian of the rights of the common man. Asking the Prime Minister to reconsider his stand on the state, Rawat said it would be nice if Modi called him and said let's forget the past and work for the development of the state. He pointed out that the Prime Minister belonged to the poor section of society and, therefore, people have expectations of a higher political standard from him. But by imposing the President rule over the state, he has let down people.
The former CM pointed out that, though BJP has alleged that Congress imposed President's Rule many times during its tenure, it should realise that those times were times of political evolution. What has finally evolved is that Article 356 should be sparingly applied.
On the sting operation, he said a corrupt person tried to do a fake sting on me. He added he was ready to face investigation in any case of alleged corruption against him.
Expressing confidence that he would prove majority on April 29, he expressed his gratitude to the people of the state, the country, the Congress Party, and the Gandhi family.
He said he has big plans for the state like reversing migration of population in seven years. Already he has increased the pension for the poor by Rs 200 so that they are discouraged from living the state. He's also started a skilling programme so that people could earn enough living in the state. We have also decided to regularize the land occupied by the poor and destitute, for whom about 30,000 jobs are also being created. Slums will be regularized. Corpus will be created to develop the slums.
"We have also decided to seize Benami Property. Money generated from that will be utilized for school and development of the poor", he declared.
