Kolkata (28.12.2023): Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar (IPS: 1989: WB) was appointed as the new director general of police (DGP) of West Bengal. Kumar is the same officer in whose support Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat on a two-day dharna in February 2019, after a Central Bureau of Investigation team reached his house to question him in alleged chit-fund scam case. She called off the demonstration after the Supreme Court of India granted him protection from arrest by the CBI. Manoj Malaviya retired on December 27, 2023 as DGP.
