Social media sites like FB, Twitter, and What's App are flooded these days with IAS officers announcements, individually as well as collectively, of their fury against the application of an unpalatable word like Babu to describe them and their profession. Babu is an east Indian term: socially, it's a term of respect; officially, it means relatively lower-ranking officers (clerks) who (some of them and not all of them) are considered notorious for their intentionally slow pace of work with the objective to wrangle bribes from the general public.
The unrestrained usage of the word Babu has of late sparked off an insurgency among the civil servants against two media houses who, driven by their corporatist philosophy, rarely miss an opportunity to pour scorn on them. This insurgency is now spreading like a wildfire on FB, Twitter, and What's App. Most of the civil servants have started boycotting TOI and India Today and have unsubscribed these publications.
The UP IAS officers association has reportedly taken a lead in condemning the two publications and asked the members to boycott these two publications for consistently using the word Babu to describe the bureaucracy. In support, Coal Secretary Anil Swaroop is said to have posted his observations on facebook.
The protest on the WhatsApp group of IAS officers is said to be stronger than it appeared in the recent FB and twitter posts.
Sanjay Bhoosreddy (IAS:1989:UP), who is Secretary, All India IAS Association, has lamented the use of the word Babu and declared that he had unsubscribed ToI & India Today app and social media platforms like FB & twitter.
He wrote on facebook on 13 April 2016:
"I have unsubscribed TOI from tomorrow. Today was my last day with TOI after a long association of around 40 years. Unable to take any more insult and cannot allow anybody including any media house to be disrespectful towards me or my profession or Service. Sorry friends, NO MORE.
I can also call names to other professions / vocations but I cannot stoop to such low levels as I belong to the Premier Civil Services. Demeaning other professions or Services or Institutions will do no good to anyone nor it will help in nation building and if anybody thinks so then I can only pray to God to give such person some sanity."
Another IAS officer of 1995 batch posted the following on FB:
"Friends on FB, I thought I'd share a decision today. I have unsubscribed The Times of India and India Today from today. I have also uninstalled their apps on my phone and unfollowed their handles on Twitter. This unfortunate decision to end this long association was taken to mark my protest against their consistent use of derogatory expressions and description of Civil servants as 'babus'. This is unacceptable and demeaning as it is used derisively and intended to humiliate. I wonder if each institution started calling the others names like this ( I refuse to engage and stoop). I am told many civil servants have also stopped reading Times of India/India Today and others will follow soon. We are very hurt and we have had enough. We will not allow you to snatch our self-respect, our sacrifice, and service to the nation and our brotherhood. This post marks the end of the uneasy and bitter relationship with the TOI/ India today."
Ashutosh Agnihotri (IAS:1999:AM) writes in an open letter to ToI editor on FB:
"Dear Editor... I have been reading your newspaper for a long time. I continued reading it even when the more evolved and aware ones advised me to read better newspapers, for I thought that you would continue to chronicle the times of our country with journalistic integrity and passion. But now, after so many years, I h
