New Delhi (13.03.2023): Prof (Dr) S Sivakumar, a Senior Professor at Indian Law Institute, New Delhi and Former Member, Law Commission of India, has been elected as the new President of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA). Prof Sivakumar is the second Indian to hold this prestigious position after late Prof N R Madhava Menon.
The election took place as part of the CLEA Golden Jubilee Conference held from March 2 to 4, 2023 in Delhi NCR and the 23rd Commonwealth Law Conference held from March 5 to 9, 2023 at Goa. A renowned legal scholar and academician with over two decades of experience in teaching and research, Prof Sivakumar has been in several leadership roles in the legal community. Prof Sivakumar has been India's Country Representative for CLEA since 1997 and has been a member of the CLEA Executive Committee since 2003. In 2019, he was elected as Vice President of CLEA.
At the national and international levels, Prof Sivakumar has been instrumental in driving change and growth by having taken on the responsibility of overseeing two international projects as the Honorary Chairman of the Commonwealth Law Reform Commission (CLRC) and the Commonwealth Comparative Constitutional and Public Law Project (3C&PL).
As an accomplished scholar and prolific writer, Prof Sivakumar has authored numerous books and research papers on a wide range of legal issues, including human rights, constitutional law, and legal education. His scholarly contributions have been widely acknowledged and appreciated by legal practitioners, academicians, and researchers worldwide. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of legal education, Prof Sivakumar was awarded the prestigious CLEA Golden Jubilee Global Legal Education Award-2023 Commenting on his election, Prof. Sivakumar said, "I am deeply honoured and humbled by the trust that the CLEA has placed in me, I am committed to working with the organization's members and partners to promote and enhance legal education and research in Commonwealth countries, and to advance the rule of law and access to justice for all”.
