New Delhi (08.03.2022): What will, or can, the BJP do if it doesn't get a clear majority in the UP Assembly elections whose results, like other states that have gone to the polls, may come out on March 10, 2022?

Another relevant question is what will, or can, the BJP do if none of the major contenders like the RLD-SP alliance or the BSP get a clear verdict?

There is a belief in some political circles that, in case it doesn't get a clear majority on its own, it may work on its oft-repeated plan to lure away the RLD if it is not working on it already and promote Mayawati as the CM with Jayant Choudhury as Deputy CM with its full support. This tactic has the advantage of improving its image and clout among the farmers of western UP who have lent their support to RLD leader Jayant Choudhary.

By promoting Mayawati as the CM, the BJP can again legitimately assert that it cares more for the pride of Dalit communities. This move has another advantage: it will not only dash any hope of the Akhilesh-led alliance for getting back to power again in UP, but it will also break his alliance and completely sideline the small-time power brokers from certain communities that have tied their fortunes with him.

In a situation of marginal majority, the BJP's game plan may remain focused on winning over Jayant Choudhury as well as Mayawati. However, in such a situation, the BJP may have to find a replacement for Adityanath. It may have to find a leader from its rank whose cordiality and congeniality can keep lubricating a new alliance without compromising on performance.

It may seem that whatever plan the UP BJP may follow will be guided by the necessity to maximize its gains in the state during the 2024 general elections.

So powerful, and legitimately so, is the BJP's desire to win the 2024 general elections that even in case of a clear majority with lower numbers than last time, it may go for reengineering the social alliance with a new CM at the helm of affairs in the state. For the sake of victory, as the Gujarat example shows, the BJP dares and experiments with new leaders instead of wasting its time on old and burnt-out leaders whose utility is expired.
