As Union Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Nayan
Chaubey (IAS:1981:TN) is scheduled to superannuate on 31st of this month, it is
speculated that the government may draft the incumbent AAI Chairman Dr.
Guruprasad Mohapatra (IAS:1986:GJ) as Chaubey’s successor. In case the speculations turn out to be true,
it may necessitate a lateral shift of Air India CMD P S Kharola (IAS:KN:1985)
who may opt to exit rather than reporting to a junior batch officer. Else, there is a possibility that the
administration may either shift Kharola to another ministry or pick up a 1984
batch IAS officer as Chaubey’s successor. In case Dr. Mohapatra is drafted as
next Civil Aviation Secretary, the establishment would have to start looking
for a new AAI Chairman and Air India CMD. Probably, this may be a reason for a delay in
the announcement of the name of the next Civil Aviation Secretary. It may further be underlined that Choubey may be appointed UPSC Member ahead of his retirement.
