Despite the plethora of issues
concerning the rules, eligibility, and utility, the government finally on
Wednesday interviewed the applicants for the posts of five-Member National
Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson. Reportedly, as many as 64
candidates had applied for some of the vacant posts. Of all those interviewed,
only 08 were selected. The panel of selected candidates was later sent to the
competent authority for the final selection and appointment of 04 of them as Members. Priyank Kanoongo was appointed
this month as the chairman of the NCPCR. Yashwant Jain is currently serving as
its Member Laws, related to children and Dr. R G Anand as Member- Child
Psychology or Sociology. NCPCR has a total of five posts
of members. These are Member- Laws related to children; Member- Child
Psychology or Sociology; Member- Education; Member- Child Health, Care, Welfare
and Development and Member- Elimination of child Labour or Children in
Distress. The Commission was set up in
March 2007 under the Commissions of Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act,
2005, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Women & Child
Development. The Commission's mandate is to
ensure that all Laws, Policies, Programmes, and Administrative Mechanisms are
in consonance with the Child Rights objectives as enshrined in the Constitution
of India and also the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Child is
defined as a person in the 0 to 18 years age group.
