New Delhi (19.10.2024): The Central Government has nominated Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as ninth Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till the age of 65 years whichever is the earliest. She is former Mahila Morcha chief of the BJP.

In addition to Rahatkar's appointment, the government has also named Dr Archana Majumdar as a new member of the NCW for a three-year term.  Vijaya Rahatkar previously served as the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women. Notably, Rahatkar introduced initiatives like “Sakshama” (support for acid attack survivors), “Prajwala” (linking self-help groups to central government schemes), and “Suhita” (24x7 helpline service for women). She also focused on legal reforms addressing issues like POCSO, anti-triple talaq measures, and anti-human trafficking units. Additionally, she promoted digital literacy programs and launched a publication named “Saad” dedicated to women's issues.
