Mumbai (31.03.2026): Ashwini Bhide (IAS: 1995: MH), Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, has been appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). She has become the first woman to hold the post.
The current Municipal Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, completes his tenure on March 31, 2026. While other candidates, including Sanjay Mukherjee (IAS: 1996: MH) and Aseem Gupta (IAS: 1994: MH), were considered, Bhide was appointed to the post due to her experience and administrative approach.
She has played a key role in Mumbai’s metro expansion, particularly in executing technically challenging underground projects, and her earlier tenure as Additional Municipal Commissioner in the BMC gives her deep insight into the functioning of the city’s civic body.
Bhide is expected to serve a full tenure until 2030, overseeing Mumbai’s infrastructure projects, sanitation, traffic management, and overall urban governance. Her appointment is being seen as a move likely to bring tighter administrative discipline and faster execution of key civic initiatives.
