Ms Vanaja N Sarna (IRS C&CE:1980) was, on 30 March 2017, appointed to the post of Chairman, Central Board of Customs & Central Excise; an apex policy making body for indirect taxes. She will take over from the outgoing Chairman Najib Shah (IRS C&CE:1979) whois retiring today.
The appointment comes at a time when Modi Govt is gearing up to roll out GST- new indirect tax regime- from 01 July 2017. The board, under Ms Sarna's chairmanship, will be responsible for ensuring successful roll out and subsequent implementation of the GST, with the help of VAT officers of state govts and others.
It may be noted that the board will also be rechristened as Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) after necessary legislative approval in the GST regime.
The CBEC comprises of a chairperson and a maximum of six members.
