Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi considers the Maternity Benefit Bill, which is pending in the Lok Sabha, though moved by the Labour Ministry, as her baby since she had originally come up with the idea. At the Cabinet meeting this week, she reportedly told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that she had been receiving hundreds of mails every week from women eager to know when could they start availing the 26-week leave under the new law. She is learnt to have requested the PM that the government must try to get the Bill through the Lok Sabha in spite of the disruptions created by the Opposition.
