In what could be a major setback for the BJP-led government in Maharashtra, a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court comprising of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice  N M Jamdar, in a batch of PILs and a Writ Petition filed by various citizen groups and affected fishermen, has quashed the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted in the year 2017 to the Rs. 14,000 crore 29.2 km coastal road project connecting south Mumbai’s Marine Drive to north Mumbai’s Borivali by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), Expert Assessment Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF).

The Division Bench, while restraining the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) from executing the works required to lay down the coastal road, has also held that the MCGM cannot proceed with the construction works without obtaining environmental clearances under Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification.

Further, the Bench held that the MCZMA will also be required to obtain permission under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

The citizen of Mumbai are looking forward to this development to upgrade the infrastructure of Mumbai City and its delay will surely be a huge let down for Mumbaikars.
