lohani-to-be-named-as-chairman-railway-board Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that the incumbent Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani (IRSME:1982) may shortly be named as Chairman, Railway Board. Lohani, popularly called as 'Turnaround Man'. Lohani took over as CMD of the struggling state-run carrier Air India on August 31, 2015. The outgoing CRB A K Mital (IRSS:1976) is all set to retire on July 31 after completing his 19 months tenure. Making a departure from the established convention and rules & provisions, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu handed over the task of finding out a capable CRB to a  search committee in the first week of this month. It is aften said about Lohani that he never lets any opportunity to slip out of hand. His ten months tenure in Air India is summarised by the fact that Air India registered an operational profit of approx Rs 10 Crs after a gap of 11-12 years. If some reliable sources are to be believed, he has plans ready to raise the profit to about 300 crs. Prima-facie, it may not look feasible, but his successful efforts to win aircraft maintenance contract from many countries worth 65,000 crores has made the new profit target achievable. In case, Lohani is made CRB he will have two years and five months time as residual service to unfold his plans to set the Indian Railways on a growth trajectory. Doubts are raised that if Lohani has been doing so well in Air India, then why should he be made CRB. If the stakes in Indian Railways (financial, capital, economic growth wise and social-political impact wise) is gauged, the 'turnaround man's' services would mean a lot as CRB. In addition, since Air India now has a road map, it would help the new Air India chief in his endeavor. At the same time, there are other names also floating around as successor to Mital - of Ravindra Gupta (IRSME officer), GM, SCR; A K Goel (IRSS officer), GM, SER, and Md Jamshed (IRTS officer), Member Traffic.
