kejriwal-edition-of-night-of-the-long-knivesIt was a mini, corrupt, and perverted version of the Night of the Long Knives/Operation Hummingbird (Berlin: June 30-July 2, 1934) at the office of Delhi's 'Ghazi' chief minister on the night/early morning of February19/20. As many as 11 musclemen of Arvind Kejriwal including his deputy chief minister and descendant of the great Sisodia clan Manish Sisodia locked up Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, allegedly hit him in his head, and sought to coerce him to agree to release the TV ads glorifying the deeds of Kejriwal and his god-damned government. Of course, the law-fearing CS didn't succumb to physical coercion, and next morning on February 20, he filed a police complaint. Delhi Police has reportedly filed an FIR against AAP legislators Prakash Jarwal and Amantullah Khan. While Jarwal is detained, Khan is said to be absconding. As the wheels of law move menacingly towards Jarwal and Ajay Dutt before moving towards Kejriwal, AAP MLAs from Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar respectively, they have claimed the bureaucrat made casteist remarks. They have lodged a complaint against him with the Delhi Police and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. This defense of the AAP MLAs may seem like a malicious afterthought in the light of the CS's official complaint. "A threat was made that I would be implicated in false cases including the SC/ST Act." The IAS Association, after a meeting with the CS in the morning, issued a detailed statement which said the meeting had been called "to pressurize the CS to release publicity material regarding achievements of the government, in violation of the Supreme Court guidelines. Therefore, the meeting was absolutely devoid of any emergency or public interest". The statement further added:"This incident is the culmination of a series of incidents of officers being subjected to verbal abuse and intimidation by political authorities from time to time...This incident, which happened inside the official residence of the CM, clearly appears to be pre-planned, pre-meditated and absolutely without any provocation on the part of the CS, in view of the fact that the meeting was called at midnight, the CS was called alone in the presence of a large number of MLAs." Here, the Association needs to be reminded that the political class has not limited its relationship with civil servants to only verbal abuse and intimidation. Take the case of late Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha. It is widely believed (because in India's colonial legal system nothing could be proved ever against any cunning criminal) that she was personally responsible for the acid attack on the 1971 batch IAS officer V S Chandralekha in 1992 - which left her completely disfigured. The trouble between the civil servant and the CM started with a proposal to divest the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). Chandralekha happened to be chairman of TIDCO at that time. She opposed the divestment of state-owned TIDCO's stakes in Southern Petrochemicals Industries Corporation (SPIC), fearing that it would cause substantial loss to the exchequer. For saving money of the people, she was attacked with acid. And what did the central government do? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Jayalalitha's may be an extreme example and maybe an exception. But the rude and crude behavior has been the hallmark of some of the most popular democratic politicians of this country. Dead and long gone (thank hell for that) voluble but cowardly Defense Minister V K Krishna Menon was very fond of summoning military chiefs at midnight for consultation because he was very fond of spending his daytime with all kinds of women. After summoning military chiefs, he would keep them waiting for four-five hours till the officer dared to ask what was the matter. Menon would, then, conveniently gasp and say that he forgot about the officer's presence. After several such incidents, legendary military chiefs were either constrained to resign or seek lateral
