Revenue intelligence departments are seeing a lot of changes. Senior bureaucrat Dr John Joseph (IRS C&CE) was last week appointed Director General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DG GSTI). The DG GSTI is the new name given to the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), mandated to check service tax and central excise duty evasion. Joseph is at present posted in Navasheva (Mumbai) as Principal Chief Commissioner (Customs & Central Excise)  and expected to take the new charge soon. He was also held the IRS (C&CE) Union as President during 2015-17. Prior to his Mumbai posting he served as DG, DGEP. He is a 1983 batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise). He has earlier worked important departments, including the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The post of chief of central excise intelligence (now GST intelligence) has been lying vacant for over a month after R K Mahajan took charge as Member, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). Mahajan has been given the additional charge of the DG GSTI till the joining of the new chief. The DRI has also got a new chief.
