CBI says Suman was arrested along with his junior and Income Tax Officer Partap Das, a middleman Pranjol Sarma and another private person Ramesh Goenka. It is alleged that Suman, posted as Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit) Guwahati with additional charge of Jorhat, had demanded Rs 50 lakh from a businessman Suresh Agarwala, Director of M/s Win Power Infra Pvt Ltd, Jorhat, having offices at Guwahati and Delhi, to show undue favour to him by passing favourable order in an appeal arising out of assessment done in respect of one of the shell company of Agarwala. The arrests were made when Rs 40 lakh out of the decided amount were being paid. CBI said that it tracked the bribery case through its source information. This is not the first time that Suman has been investigated by CBI. Earlier in 2005, the Bureau had booked him under the prevention of corruption act for amassing disproportionate assets (DA) worth Rs 55 lakh, more than his known sources of income. In the DA case, a CBI judge hearing the matter had claimed in 2015 that Suman had tried to influence him by arranging to offer a bribe through a third party in order to get a decision in his favor.
