Aiming to double its bottled water production, Indian Railways may invest around Rs 1,000 crores. According to a report, at present, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) produces around 6 lakh Rail Neer water bottles a day across its seven bottling plants present across the country. The Rail Neer brand is handled by IRCTC, a subsidiary of Indian Railways, from production to all managerial activities.
The report stated that on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis, Indian Railways is planning to build 11 more plants across country. The new plants will reportedly be built in Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bhusawal, Guwahati, Jabalpur, Kota, Nangal, Ranchi, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The land required for them will be provided by Railways, either on its own or through a memorandum of understanding with the respective state government.
The Rail Neer brand has a captive market of more than 7,000 railway stations across the country and is available in more than 1,000 trains through private contractors. In the financial year 2018, it contributed around Rs 170 crore or 11% of IRCTC's revenue.
