New Delhi (03.12.2024): Just a week ahead of the completion of the extended tenure of Shaktikanta Das (Retd IAS: 1980: TN) as RBI Governor, people in the power corridors are curious about his likely successor. Das succeeded Urjit Patel on 11.12.2018 as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). His six-year extended tenure ends on 10.12.2024 while the New Delhi administration is yet to come out with a clarity on his status.
Speculations over extension vs appointment may drag further till this weekend but the general understanding has been that after Urjit Patel case, the government would prefer a seasoned and trusted bureaucrat only. Administrative acumen may have an edge over performance.
A section of insiders believes that former Union Secretary for Financial Services and incumbent IRDA Chairman Debashish Panda (Retd IAS: 1988: UP) may be picked as the next RBI governor. Another section of insiders believes that Dr Saurabh Garg (Retd IAS: 1991: OR), Secretary in the Ministry of Statistics & Program Implementation, stands a fair chance. Two serving secretaries are also seen as natural claimant; DEA Secretary Ajay Seth (IAS: 1987: KN) and DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kant Pandey (IAS: 1987: OR).
Though, a section of ace observers in the government and administration does not write off the possibility of Deputy CAG Anand Mohan Bajaj (IA&AS: 1990) being considered for the post; who has more than 30 years of experience in the field of finance, financial markets and economic affairs.
