Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu's idea to equip ticket examiners on trains with handheld devices to check tickets and issue receipts has run aground, thanks to bureaucrats who introduced a bulky machine with a printer attached. Prabhu's office has expressed extreme displeasure over the device that costs about Rs 15,000. So, officials of railway's software division, Centre for Railway Information Systems, are looking out for handheld devices similar to an inexpensive smartphone with a special app.
