Aiming at transforming Indian Railways into Green Railway by 2030 Ministry of Railways has taken a slew of path-breaking initiatives to combat climate change and mitigate global warming. Railway Electrification, green certification for stations and fixed installations, enhancing the energy efficiency of engines, fitting bio-toilets in coaches and switching to renewable sources of energy are parts of its strategic moves for achieving net-zero carbon emission.

By April 2020 Indian Railways attained the electrification of 39866 RKM (Route Kilometer) out of total 68155 RKM. In the last 6 years alone it marked 18605 RKM electrification work against 3835 RKM in 2009-2014. Amid COVID pandemic the electrification of 385 RKM in worth underlining. During 2020-21 it is expected to touch 7000 RKM mark. It aspired for Complete Electrification by 2023.

Further, Rooftop solar electricity is planned to reduce long-term fuel costs and protect the environment. Against its target of 500MW, it has achieved 100MW at 900 Stations and other buildings and 285 MW projects are in progress at different levels.

It has planned a massive 20 GW solar energy power plant on its open plot and along the tracks. They have already floated tenders for 1.6 GW, 400 MW and 1 GW under the ownership model of REMCL, a JV of Railways (49%) and RITES(51%) in three different phases. One project 1.7MW at Bina (MP) has already been commissioned in collaboration with BHEL in 4.5 months only.

So far as wind energy sector is concerned 103MW power plant is already commissioned in three states namely Rajasthan(26MW), Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra (56.4 MW).

Railways have already installed sustainable LED Lighting at all stations in March 2018. It has also acquired several green certifications for its number of projects, buildings and stations. Upgradation of energy-efficient Locomotives and converting the trains to HOG unleashing approx. 70 million Liter Diesel worth Rs 450 crore. To add more towards its commitment Railways fitted 2,44,000 bio-toilets in 69,000 coaches.
