Indianmandarins has learnt that Union Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari's performance is causing severe heart burn and jealousies in political corridors of BJP as well as Congress Party. He has already accelerated road construction activities to the current level of 18 KMs a day from 2 KMs during the previous UPA regime and has promised to speed up the process to 30 KMs a day from FY17, besides creating the legal framework for 111 national waterways.
This has set his rivals knock down his proposals. For instance, he has sought as much as a record Rs 700 billions ($10.3 billion) for financing road construction in FY17 to spur economic growth. But it's questionable whether the Union Finance Ministry will agree to his proposal.
Besides seeking more than 50 percent increase in budgetary allocations for the next financial year starting April, Nitin Gadkari has often said in in public that his ministry was also looking to borrow overseas. The overall target is mobilizing Rs 5 trillion (about $73 billion at current exchange rate) to finance road projects over the next three years, he said.
