Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya joined the Indian Police Service in 1973 when even working women were not encouraged. Former DGP of Uttarakhand, the first ever woman DGP of a state, died in Mumbai on August 26, 2019 night after a prolonged illness.

She was appointed as the DGP of Uttarakhand in the year 2004 and retired on October 31, 2007. She tried her hands into politics when she contested 2014 Lok Sabha election from Haridwar as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate but she could not make it.
