New Delhi (14.02.2023): One and a half months ahead of the retirement of NMDC CMD Union Ministry of Steel sent a proposal to the secretariat of the appointing authority seeking an extension in tenure ofCMD Sumit Deb for a period of one year beyond his retirement i.e. February 28, 2023.
If well-placed sources are to be believed, the Ministry of Personnel on February 07, 2023 in its responsemade certain observations throwing some ideas about the prospects of extension. It said that rules, barring a few exceptions, do not permit extension in service beyond the retirement of incumbents at the Board level in CPSEs.
It also underlined that the extension beyond retirement may be given (not exceeding 65 yrs of age) in the case of any board-level incumbent of a sick CPSE who contributed exceptionally well to the turnaround of that CPSE. But at the same time, it indicates that NMDC Limited is not a sick CPSE. Simultaneously, it indicated that a similar proposal from the Ministry was recently returned by the Competent Authority. A section of insiders says that the ACC Secretariat has sent the ball in the court of the Ministry to further clarify and build up the case.
It may be mentioned that the PESB had advertised the post (CMD, NMDC) on 13.10.2022 and the selection meeting is yet to be scheduled. Reportedly, the Ministry was pulled up for delaying the process of advertising the vacancy to fill up the post. Seemingly, the Ministry of Personnel raised eyebrows by saying that it was an anticipated vacancy and the Ministry somehow failed to follow the prescribed timeline approved by the ACC for advertising and filling up of the Board-level post.
