New Delhi (09.03.2024): In an abrupt development, Union Ministry of Law and Justice announced the resignation of Election CommissionerArun Goel (Retd IAS: 1985: PB). Goel’s resignation right ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha Polls captures the imagination of the nation. There is already a vacant position of one Election Commissioner (vice Anup Chandra Pandey), so now ECI is left only with Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar (Retd IAS: 1984: JH).
Goel’s resignation appears a clear signal of announcement of appointment of two more EC’s before the General Elections are notified which is expected next week. His abrupt resignation reminds of the circumstances that had led to the sudden resignation of Ashok Lavasa (Retd IAS: 1980: HY) in August 2020. He resigned on August 18, 2020 which came into effect 13 days later (i.e. 31.08.2020). He was given honourable exit to Asian Development Bank. But in Goel’s case, it is effective from the same day i.e. March 9, 20204.
Sources say that mishandling of Electoral Bond case in the Supreme Court is responsible for his exit whereas another section says it has something to do with preparations for the elections. Sources say, Goel was in Kolkata for ECI's poll review meeting but he cut short his tour and abruptly returned to Delhi citing 'health issue'.
Whatever the reason is, his appointment and exit both were newsmakers and surprising. His appointment process took place in 24 hours and his resignation was also accepted in similar times by the President of India.
