The CJI will decide on the next course of action on the matter after examining the report. This incident came to light after a fire broke out at the residence of Justice Varma on the night of March 14, 2025. The said room was locked and Justice Varma was not present.

After breaking open the room, the fire fighters found a bag containing huge cash. The firefighters informed the Delhi Police who reached at the scene and informed Delhi Police Commissioner who informed the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. The matter was brought to the notice of Justice Khanna by Justice Upadhyay.

There was a transfer order for Justice Varma from Delhi to Allahabad which was dubbed as punishment for him. This took the social media by storm questioning accountability. So, the Supreme Court clarified, “There is misinformation and rumours being spread with regard to the incident at the residence of Justice Varma. The Supreme Court also clarified that proposal for transfer of Justice Varma to Allahabad High Court is independent and separate from the in-house enquiry procedure.
