New Delhi (13.04.2021): Election commissioner Sushil Chandra (Retd IRS IT:1980) on Tuesday took over as the country’s 24th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He replaces Sunil Arora (Retd IAS:1980:RJ) who completed his tenure on 12 April 2021.

President of India appointed Chandra as the new CEC in line with the convention to appoint the senior-most election commissioner as the CEC. Chandra is the senior-most election commissioner, ahead of Rajiv Kumar (Retd IAS:1984:JH), in the three-member poll panel.

Chandra was appointed as an Election Commissioner on February 14, 2019. Along with Sunil Arora and Ashok Lavasa, Chandra oversaw the successful organization of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

As the new CEC, Sushil Chandra will oversee the completion of the ongoing assembly elections in West Bengal, where four out of eight rounds of voting have been completed. The final phase will take place on April 29, followed by the counting of votes and declaration of results on May 2.
