Mumbai (30.08.2024): In view of Maharashtra Assembly elections to be held before the year end, the state government reportedly asked incumbent Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik (IAS: 1987: MH) whose retirement is due in June 2025 to step down to take over as head of State Election Commission’s post for a 5-year term. Reportedly, the government wants to replace her with Iqbal Singh Chahal (IAS: 1989: MH). Sujata Saunik was appointed as the first woman CS of the state recently.
Chahal has had a wide experience of running Mumbai’s civic life as the Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Though the Centre empanelled him for holding Secretary-level post in Government of India yet he was put on wait in the state.
