bihar-police-officer-gets-an-extortion-call Bihar's senior police officials, magistrates, and government officials have been receiving extortion calls as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar become a full-time Prachark of alcohol prohibition. Deputy Inspector General of the Saharsa range, Chandrika Prasad, on Monday lodged a complaint with the local police station after receiving an extortion call demanding Rs. 20 lakh. Introducing himself as Azam Khan, the caller threatened to bomb the DIG, who is set to retire soon, and his family if he failed to comply with the demand. This, however, is not the first time that a senior law enforcement or judicial official has been threatened. These incidents contradict the government's claim that incidents of crime, extortion and kidnapping have gone down. "There has been a 27 percent decrease in crime ever since prohibition has been imposed in the State," said a senior police officer. Nishant Kumar Priyadarshi, a First Class Judicial Magistrate at Motihari in East Champaran district, received an extortion call on June 23. Priyadarshi, who lodged an FIR with town police, said he had received two calls demanding Rs. 25 lakh. Similar extortion calls are being made to a large number of well-to-do people except the CM, his ministers, and RJD leaders.
