Initiating this process, the security commission has reportedly sent the names of five senior-most IPS officers of Assam-Meghalaya cadre to the UPSC namely. P S Purohit, YC Modi, Raghvendra Awasthi, RP Agrawal and B L Buam. Purohit & Modi are on central deputation and are unlikely to be made DGP. Hence, three officers Awasthi, Agrawal and Buam are the contenders for this top position of DGP. In accordance with the recent rulings of the Supreme Court, the UPSC is expected to send a panel of three officers to Meghalaya Government this week. Then the state government will use its prerogative to pick a name of their choice from the panel of three officers. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court on July 03 had passed a ruling directing all states and UTs to abstain from appointing an acting DGP. States were directed to send names of senior police officers to the UPSC for being considered as probable candidates to be appointed as DGPs. The UPSC will prepare a list of three suitable officers and the state will appoint one officer from this panel as police chief.
