New Delhi (02.02.2023): A geek turned bureaucrat, who joined politics and subsequently became Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw’s calm, composed and a very well articulation at an event of World Economic Forum at Davos reiterates the fact that India has arrived on the global map in every sense. His deliberations gave an object lesson in managing public image where he talked about $10 billion first trench Indian investment in Semiconductor sector and gradually making import substitution to an export driven sector for India which it will be exporting to countries including the US. Semiconductors are very important for the mobile telephone, automobile sector and many others. But this will require a long haul effort and collaboration.
Electronics manufacturing is significantly large now with an $87 billion dollar business. the iPhone supply chain is shifting to India is what the minister said at the event. Three years from now India will be a large telecom equipment exporter. The industry requires Semiconductor as the primary raw material for the sector. A good talent pool working with leading cutting edge technology. Beside the present talent generation by Indian universities, India is committed to develop 85000 more talents in the next 10 years. The policy was announced January 1, 2022 last year and the government tied up with 60 universities. Semiconductors are going to become a $1 trillion in the next six years world over.
Vaishnaw is an M Tech from IIT Kanpur & MBA from Wharton. He served as an IAS Officer and later as Managing Director GE Transportation & Vice President Siemens before joining the BJP as a Private Secretary to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. When political leaders speak using technical jargon like SoC, Legacy Systems and Cutting-Edge systems, one can understand that the future is in good hands.
