New Delhi (01.01.2025): In order to enhance coordination among armed forces, personal staff officers known as Aides-de-Camp (ADCs) to chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force will now be appointed from services other than their own. The change has become effective from January 1, 2025 and has been accepted by the three services chiefs showing their commitment for inter-service integration.
Prior to this arrangement, services chiefs used to select ADCs from within their own branches. Usually, they chose officers from units with which they had a special connection. This new arrangement, part of 200-point reform agenda outlined by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chouhan, represents a meaningful step towards fostering jointness among the services.
The role of ADCs is important that includes managing chief's daily affairs, attendance at official events and meetings, scheduling, correspondence and several other administrative works. Now, assigning ADCs from different services is likely to promote a deeper understanding and cooperation across the branches which is essential for modern military operations. A special Joint Division has been established at the Defence Services Staff College to encourage collaborative and inter-service approaches to warfare, emphasising the importance of integration and mutual understanding.
