New Delhi (10.12.2021): Following the tragic death of the country's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Bipin Rawat in an unfortunate chopper crash on Wednesday in Kunoor the Union Government is expected to kick start the process for the appointment of Gen Rawat's successor. Army chief M M Narvane is seen as the prospective candidate for the coveted job. General Naravane is scheduled to retire on April 7, 2022. If Narvane is elevated to this position, he will get a tenure of one year at the post of CDS.

Reportedly, Navy chief R Hari Kumar is also a contender for this position. Before occupying the post of Navy chief, R.Hari Kumar served as deputy CDS under Gen Bipin Rawat. This work experience as Deputy CDS may strengthen his candidature for the post of CDS. Sources claimed that any Four Star General is eligible for the post of CDS. Therefore, apart from Army, Air Force and Navy chiefs, few more Four-Star General may be in the race as per laid down norms.
