Port Blair (04.08.2023): The circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court in Port Blair has directed suspension of Andaman and Nicobar Chief Secretary Keshav Chandra (IAS: 1995: AGMUT) and also asked Lt Governor Admiral D K Joshi to deposit a fine of Rs 5 lakh from his own finds in a case of contempt of court.
In a case where the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) affiliated Andaman Sarvajanik Nirman Vibhag Mazdoor Sangh had demanded a grant of 1/30th of pay along with DA benefits to the daily-rated mazdoor (DRMs) as ordered by the Calcutta High Court but it was not complied with.
The court asked LG to appear on the adjourned date, in virtual mode, and CS to appear personally to in the court to explain why they should not be committed to prison for contempt of court. The next senior most officer in the administration would discharge the functions of the Chief Secretary. The court also directed Admiral Joshi to deposit a sum of Rs 5 lakh within seven days.
If some well placed sources are to be believed the Union Home Ministry has decided to move to Supreme Court against the content order.
