ak-to-use-budget-to-win-back-supportDelhi CM Arvind Kejriwal loves to squander public money to promote himself as a new messiah. The humongous rise in the Delhi government's publicity budget to over Rs 500 crores from the paltry sum of Rs 25-50 crores by the previous Shiela Dixit administration serves as a solid evidence in this regard. Now faced with the possibility of a mid-term poll for 20 Assembly seats in the Capital after the disqualification of AAP legislators on the charge of Office of Profit, he is said to be preparing a Rs 52,000 crore budget. What he may do in the budget is a matter of conjecture at the moment. But leaked information reveals his desire to spend as much as Rs 600 cores on woollen garments for students studying in government schools. Do Delhi government school students really need this gift or they need something else more urgently? Reportedly, Kejriwal wants to allocate as much as Rs 14,000 crores for education. This may be a good move provided the money is not frittered away on fake and unwanted things. It may be a good idea to spend some of this money on improving the quality of education in government schools by creating better labs for science students and better sports facilities for interested students. In view of Gurugram's Pradyumn murder case, the AAP's proposed Budget for 2018-19 will have an allocation of Rs 200 crore for installation of CCTV in Delhi government schools. However desirable all this may be, there remains a big question mark on the acceptability of Kejriwal as CM. The election may show whether he still retains the trust of the people who voted him to power not too long ago.
