Gadkari’s business sense !

To say that Nitin Jairam Gadkari is among a few politicians in India who has a great business sense too won’t be wrong. But many a times he is criticised for splurging money on certain projects but later on he is applauded for his vision. Multi-level mechanised parking bay appears to have been one among them.

In the last few months Gadkari’s ministry is suddenly flooded with dozens of contracts including that of MCDs and Govt of Gujarat which appears to have become a new stream of revenue earnings.

Statue of Unity, PM Modi’s ambitious project at Kewadia, is attracting huge influx of tourist vehicle everyday and Sardar Sarovar Project officials too are in talks with NHIDCL top officials for construction of a parking bay with a capacity of over 2000 vehicles.

It may be recalled that Gadkari had faced lots of criticisms about feasibility and spending of huge public money when his ministry came up with the idea of building a multi-level parking bay for Transport Bhawan. Sometimes later in a public gathering early this year, he recalled series of criticism on the issue. Then he underlined that his idea was to create an example which might pull demands from various states and agencies winning contracts for the ministry.

Recently, North and South MCD (Delhi) too finalised the MoU with his ministry for constructing over a dozen of such parking bays each costing approx. Rs 15 crore. And such proposals from across the country are in queue.

Will a unified transport ministry be a reality in NaMo 2.0?

The Modi govt has once again started gauging prospects of merging rail, roads, aviation and shipping into one unified transport ministry as practiced in countries like China, Japan and a few others. Reportedly, a panel of secretaries was constituted by the PM to recommend transformative ideas about transport and infrastructure sectors to provide integrated multi-modal mobility solutions. Cities like London and New York have a single body to govern public transport.

Cabinet Secretary has already had a meeting with the panel of secretaries which may make a presentation of the proposal to the PM soon. The NaMo administration had conceived the idea of an omnibus transport ministry in its first term only which appears to continue in NaMo 2.0 as well.

Niti Aayog in hurry: Interview for five JS & AS level positions held today

By IndianMandarins 15 May 2019

In a move that reflects high degree of confidence of NaMo administration to return to power again selection process for top level NITI Aayog officials were undertaken with a sense of urgency on Wednesday (15 May 2019).

Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that the Aayog held interviews today to select incumbents for five positions of Adviser (JS level) and Senior Adviser (Additional Secretary level) to look after sectors like Economics, Transport, Energy, Human Resources etc.

These posts were advertised in June 2018 with one month window for submitting applications. So far as many as 300 applications were received of which only 13 candidates were finally shortlisted by the Screening Committee comprising of NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant (IAS:1980:KL); Special Secretary, Yaduvendra Mathur (IAS:1976:RJ) and Joint Secretary, Alok Kumar (IAS:1993:UP).

Surprisingly, the Screening Committee was constituted only in the second week of April 2019, or almost eight months after the posts were advertised.

Out of 13 shortlisted candidates four have reportedly expressed unwillingness for the coveted positions in the Aayog. This left only nine candidates on the turf for selection. Some of these candidates are still awaiting cadre clearance, integrity certificate and APRs. Among the nine two are internal aspirants for the posts.

Those in the know about goings on in the Aayog’s point out that for five senior (JS and AS level) positions the small number of shortlisted candidates are too few to pick the best among the lot which could have easily been available for the vacant positions.
