New Delhi (02.09.2025): In a significant change at the helm of a key environmental body, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has named Virendra Tiwari, Director of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), as the new Chairperson of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA). Virendra Tiwari, a 1990-batch Indian Forest Service (IFoS) officer from the Maharashtra cadre, will take over from the incumbent, Chirra Achalender Reddy, whose three-year term is set to conclude on November 30, 2025.
His appointment is for a period of three years, or until he attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier. The new leadership comes at a crucial time for the NBA, the statutory body established in 2003 under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002.
Virendra Tiwari's predecessor, C A Reddy (IFoS: 1986: AGMUT), had served as Chairperson since December 1, 2022. The transition marks a new chapter for the authority as it continues to grapple with the challenges of balancing conservation with economic development in one of the world's most biodiverse regions.
About National Biodiversity Authority:-
The NBA plays a pivotal role in regulating access to India's vast biological resources and ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use. Its mandate extends to advising the Central and State Governments on matters of biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, and the declaration of biologically significant areas as heritage sites. The appointment of Mr. Tiwari, with his extensive experience at the prestigious Wildlife Institute of India, signals a continued focus on scientifically grounded conservation practices.
