New Delhi (21.12.2020): Indianmandarins has learned that in deference to the wishes of its strategic ally and friend of all seasons France, the government has proposed the name of Dr. Ajay Mathur, DG of the Energy Research Institute (TERI) and a member of the PM's Council on Climate Change, to head the International Solar Alliance (ISA). The PMO has reportedly sent the proposal on Friday last, that is 18/12/2020.

This brings the curtain down on the jockeying for the coveted job among the IAS and IFS officers.

As reported by Indianmandarins earlier, Paris had requested for the appointment of a technical and knowledgeable person as it felt that a bureaucrat may not be an ideal choice for the highly complex job that involved negotiations with different nations on a global scale.

Dr.Mathur has been one of the central persons among the country's climate-change negotiators and indeed acted as India's spokesperson at the 2015 climate negotiations at Paris. According to the TERI website, he is "a global leader on technological approaches to address climate change; recently, he joined the global group of industrial, financial and think-tank leaders to co-chair an Energy Transitions Commission which will suggest ways for companies and countries to move towards climate-friendly energy futures".

From 2006 till February 2016, he functioned as the Director-General of GoI's Bureau of Energy Efficiency and was responsible for bringing energy efficiency into our homes, offices, and factories, through initiatives such as the star labeling program for appliances, the Energy Conservation Building Code, and the Perform, Achieve, and Trade program for energy-intensive industries.

Dr. Mathur, according to the website, was earlier with TERI from 1986 to 2000, and then headed the Climate Change Team of World Bank in Washington DC. He was President of Suzlon Energy Limited, and also headed the interim Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund.
