smriti-may-be-asked-for-explanation The Privileges Committee of the Upper House on Wednesday is said to have decided to seek an explanation from Human Resource Development Minister Smiti Irani for her remarks on "insults" to goddess Durga during a debate in the Rajya Sabha on campus violence. The Committee has also recommended security for CPI (M) general secretary and MP Sitaram Yechury in view of threats received by him following the debate. It wants the government to trace those responsible for the threats. The Committee's decision comes after threats to Yechury and a gherao of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman of the House P.J. Kurien in Kerala after the incident. Kurien did not, however, formally complain about the incident, said a committee member. A member of the Committee, which is headed by Mr. Kurien himself, said: "The statement that made references to the Left led to a situation where Mr Yechury got threat calls. The Committee thus decided to seek the Minister's explanation." Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sadhvi Prachi also appeared before the Committee, which had summoned her for allegedly saying that one or two people in Parliament were terrorists. According to source, Ms Prachi agreed to offer only a conditional apology, saying that while she could conditionally apologise if they wished, she did believe there were a few Parliamentarians with "terrorist" inclinations. The Committee refused to accept her apology and will mull over the action against her. Kurien, Yechury, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, BSP MP Rajpal Singh Saini and JD(U) MP K.C. Tyagi were present at the meeting. Sources said BJP MP Vinay Katiyar did not attend.
