New Delhi (08.11.2024): The Supreme Court of India has overturned its 2021 ruling and declared that the officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) are competent officers under Customs Act. The SC has thus restored their authority to issue recovery notices. The Apex Court order is a big victory for the Union government and DRI, which has now has authority to proceed with numerous pending tax recovery cases estimated at Rs 20,000 crore.
The ruling was delivered by three-judge SC bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.
