Rare: Four 1987 IAS batchmates hold key FinMin portfolios

2123New Delhi (12.04.2021): It's rare. But it has happened. Four batchmates of 1987 IAS have been posted to the same Ministry, FinMin, at the same time following the recent redistribution of work among the secretaries. Whether it's luck or design, no one knows. Expenditure Secretary Dr TV Somnathan (IAS:1987:TN), Economic Affairs Secretary Ajai Seth (IAS:1987:KN), Financial Services Secretary Debashish Panda (IAS:1987:UP), and DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey (IAS:1987:WB), all belonging to the 1987 batch, have entered the portals of North Block after they got separated after passing out from the LB Shashtri Institute. The only exception is the newly appointed Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj, who is a 1988 batch officer. Traditionally, the officer with the best rank gets to become Finance Secretary. So Panda may get the coveted post, but he will be the first to retire, while his three other batchmates are scheduled to retire in 2025, of whom Pandey will be the last. So, it may be interesting to see whether all Finance Secretaries till 2025 are drawn from the 1987 batch or there will be mid-way disruption. (By MK Shukla & Rakesh Ranjan)
