New Delhi (14.01.2026): In a major top-level reshuffle of the country’s internal security apparatus, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday cleared the appointments of new Directors General (DGs) for three primary central agencies: the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
NIA: Stability with Rakesh Aggarwal
Rakesh Aggarwal (IPS: 1994: HP) has been formally elevated to the post of Director General, NIA. Aggarwal, who was already serving as Special DG and holding additional charge of the agency, will head the premier counter-terrorism unit until his superannuation on August 31, 2028. He replaces Sadanand Vasant Date (IPS: 1990: MH) who repatriated to home cadre in December last year and later became Maharashtra DGP.
BSF: Praveen Kumar moves from ITBP
The frontline border guarding force, the BSF, also gets a regular chief in Praveen Kumar (IPS: 1993: WB). Kumar, who is the incumbent DG of the ITBP, has been lateralized to the Border Security Force for a long-term tenure ending September 30, 2030. Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections his move to the BSF is seen as heightened vigil along the western and eastern borders.
ITBP: The 'Interesting' Return of Shatrujeet Kapoor
Perhaps the most significant development in this reshuffle is the appointment of Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor (IPS: 1990: HY) as Director General, ITBP. Kapoor, the former DGP of Haryana, had been away from active duty after being sent on leave following the controversial suicide of a fellow officer in his home cadre.
His return to a high-profile central assignment to lead the mountain-trained force is being viewed with keen interests in power corridors. Kapoor will head the ITBP until his superannuation on October 31, 2026.
