New Delhi (10.05.2021): The CBI may well have its new Director by Friday this week if the scheduled meeting of the committee, comprising the PM, the CJI, and the Leader of the Opposition reaches a consensus on a name from a list of candidates qualifying for the job. Y C Modi (IPS:1984:AM), DG NIA; Arun Kumar (IPS:1985:UP), DG Railway Protection Force; Kerala DGP Loknath Behera (IPS:1985:KL), and Uttar Pradesh DGP Hitesh Chandra Awasthi (IPS:1985:UP) are among the prospective candidates with Rakesh Asthana (IPS:1984:GJ) as the front runner for the coveted post. The post has been lying vacant since February 03, 2021, and Praveen Sinha (IPS:1988:GJ) has been officiating as a stop-gap measure. It may be underlined that the Centre had in the first week of April informed the Supreme Court that the committee for selecting a new CBI director was scheduled on May 2.
