Right to differ is the essence of democracy and JNU stands tall for its democratic ethos. Though the government is very cautious about violence that erupted in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) but it is apparently prepared to counter the narrative that says the Modi government is trying to ‘stifle dissent’. Another thing that is being said that disturbance in JNU started eversince Narendra Modi came to power. However, the ruling dispensation has been of the view that the JNU has the history of violent protest so much so that former Prime Ministers of the Congress Manmohan Singh had faced unprecedented unruly behaviour of students.

Under Modi.........

  1. In Dec 2019, vehicle of JNU VC was attacked and his security guards saved him
  2. In Nov 2019 CRPF personals have been deployed in view of violence in the campus
  3. Only JNU protested against abrogation of Article 370 in J&K and abused Armed forces
  4. JNU students obstructed entry of vice president M Venkaiah Naidu in November 2019
  5. Students in JNU desecrated statue of Swami Vivekanand on November 14, 2019.
  6. On the occasion of third anniversary of hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru slogans against India was shouted
  7. A programme ‘Bina Dakghar Wala Desh’ (country without postoffice) was organised in the university which was named after poetry collection of Agha Shahid Ali.
  8. Slogan like ‘Bharat ki Barbadi Tak Jang Rahegi’ shouted in JNU.
  9. An international food festival was organised in JNU on January 26, 2015 in which Jammu and Kashmir was shown as other country.

Under other governments...

  1. In the year 2005 the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was opposed by students when he had gone to participate in a programme on the occasion of 116 birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru.
  2. Slogan shouted while his speech was on and he was shown black flag. He had somehow completed his speech and left the venue.
  3. Two Army majors and Kargil veteran were beaten up in JNU in 2000 for protesting against anti-India talks by Pakistani poet Fehmida Riyaz
  4. JNU celebrated Vijay Diwas when 75 CRPF jawans were martyred in Dantewada
  5. Beef festival was organised in the University that was banned by the Delhi High Court.
  6. In 2011, anti constitution sloganeering was done in JNU in a programme attended by Arundhati Roy and national emblems were crushed under boots.
  7. Slogan in support of independence of northeastern states and J&K are very common in JNU.
  8. Entire country celebrates Durga Puja but JNU celebrates Mahisasur with its own concocted stories.
  9. The university was closed for 45 days due to violent protest in 1981 and riots erupted in 1983 after a student was shifted from one hostel to another.
