Hyderabad (19.03.2026): Ending weeks of intense bureaucratic
speculation, the Centre on Thursday approved a three-month service extension
for Telangana Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao (IAS: 1991: TG). The extension, effective from April 1, 2026, ensures that
Rao will remain at the helm of the state’s administration until June 30, 2026.
This marks the second such reprieve for the 1991-batch officer, whose tenure
has now been extended twice by the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public
Grievances and Pensions. Key Details of the Extension The decision comes after the Telangana government formally
moved a proposal seeking to retain Rao’s services, citing administrative
continuity. Continuity Amidst Speculation While several names within the senior IAS cadre were
reportedly doing rounds as potential successors, the state government’s
preference for Rao prevailed. Sources indicate that the state was keen on
maintaining steady leadership during the current fiscal transition and ongoing
developmental projects. Rao, who was originally slated to demit office in August
2025, had previously received a seven-month extension that was set to expire on
March 31. With the fresh three-month window, the state government now has
additional time to finalize its succession plan for the top bureaucratic post. ALSO READ
