SAIL Employees Union (Corporate office) has accused SAIL Chairman of mishandling the COVID-19 situation in the organization and has demanded an inquiry into the death of one the senior officials Atul Srivastava, Director (Personnel). The Union demanded that responsibility must be fixed for criminal negligence in the matter.

General secretary of the union Raj Solanki alleged that instead of acknowledging the fact that there has been gross negligence by SAIL management in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an attempt to cover up the matter surrounding the unfortunate demise of Srivastava. There have been numerous instances of recklessness on part of the chairman’s office.

Despite the fact that over 40 senior officials at SAIL headquarter were tested positive for COVID-19 SAIL officials were asked to attend office and on failing to do so, they were threatened to be issued an official note of displeasure. Solanki writes, “We demand that an independent inquiry in the death of late Shri Atul Srivastava is conducted at the earliest.” The unfortunate part was that instead of facing reality, facts were suppressed by the higher offices of SAIL.

Solanki writes, “In the press release regarding the death of director (personnel) which was hurriedly circulated even prior to informing the family members of the deceased, it has been mentioned that the deceased was diagnosed COVID negative while we all know that he along with most of the directors of SAIL and senior officers in Chairman’s secretariat had been diagnosed COVID positive by Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi a few days back. In fact, there is a clear attempt to suppress facts and there is a deliberate attempt to show the death of Late Shri Srivastava as a death due to natural causes. Further, we come to know that the death certificate issued by concerned agencies has also mentioned that the deceased was COVID positive.”

Reportedly, Srivastava’s last rites took place in Punjabi Bagh crematorium which is specially designated for death occurring due to COVID infection in Delhi.

Though SAIL Employees Union (Corporate office) issued a press note registering its viewpoint several senior public-sector officials say that this was not the right way and right time for such move which discourages the industry management. COVID-19 management, SOPs, and protocols are as important as keeping the industry and economy running for the sake of people, employment, economy, and business eco-system.
