The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet on 'Sunday mid-night' cleared the appointment and promotion of eight IPS officers in the rank of Special DG. It included the elevation of the high-pofile Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana (IPS:1984:GJ) who was appointed (in-situ) as Special Director in CBI. Asthana is handling several high-profile investigations including the AgustaWestland scam and cases related to allegations of corruption in Delhi govt among others. In addition to Asthana, his seven other batch-mates too were promoted in Special DG rank in central agencies and central para military forces. Accordingly; Sudeep Lakhtakia (IPS:1984:TG) and Deepak Kumar Mishra (IPS:1984:UT) promoted and posted as Special DG in CRPF. Both of them currently serve as ADG in CRPF. Similarly, Dr A P Maheshwari (IPS:1984:UP) and Rajesh Ranjan (IPS:1984:BH) were promoted from ADG to Special DG in BSF;a border guarding force where they serve as ADG. Gurbachan Singh (IPS:1984:OR) promoted and appointed to the post of Special Director in Intelligence Bureau whereas Arvind Kumar (IAS:1984:AM) was granted Special DG rank in IB. S Javeed Ahmed (IPS:1984:UP), the incumbent  Director, NICFS, was promoted (in-situ) to Special DG rank.
