Another
embarrassment to the NaMo administration. A day after it allowed an eight-month
extension of service to Punjab DGP Suresh Arora (IPS:1982:PB), he has expressed unwillingness
to continue. Meantime,
the state government has asked the Home Department to set up a panel of five
officers to be sent to the Centre for approval as per Supreme Court orders.
Indianmandarins has learned that Mohd Mustafa or Dinkar Gupta are ahead in the
race for the DGP post. Arora's
extension is said to have upset the CM office as it didn't send any proposal in
this regard to the Union Home Ministry. In fact, the state government was
awaiting a Supreme Court decision on the matter having filed a petition on DGP
appointment. The
Chief Minister’s Office reportedly held a series of meetings and found the
Centre gave the extension on a previous letter seeking Arora’s extension by the
state government. In the afternoon, Arora informed the government that he had
not sought a fresh extension. Raveen
Thukral, Punjab CM’s spokesperson, said the government was studying the SC
order and the extension to the DGP.
