The Congress is said to have nominated its leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge for the post of Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament. He will succeed his party colleague K V Thomas who has completed three terms at the post.
The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on Tuesday wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker, conveying Kharge's name for the PAC chairmanship, a post that traditionally goes to the main Opposition party.
Kharge is currently the Congress' floor leader in Lok Sabha without the recognition as Leader of Opposition. The PAC post will entitle him for a Cabinet rank and an office at Parliament House, besides the honor of heading the prestigious post. Indications are that he will continue as floor leader for the time being.
A senior leader from Karnataka belonging to the Dalit community, Kharge is a former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and was union minister for railways and labor during the UPA regime.
